I have recently been taking classes in sustainable landscape design and I am brand new to horticulture, home owning and most things in life. It is my dream to have backyard ducks and a vegetable garden. I suppose the reason that I am starting this blog is to document my trials and tribulations in gardening, home repair and other adventures. 


Whenever possible I will be posting Before and Afters, because who doesn't like that? I would like this blog to act as a more specific resource for the Chicago area as well as Dupage County.


One of the things I will be focusing on is Sustainable Development.
Michael Thomas Needham referred to 'Sustainable Development' "as the ability to meet the needs of the present while contributing to the future generations’ needs. 

I will explore the ecological benefits of using plants native to your region in landscaping. Did you know that most native species will only eat the plants that evolved with them in their region? NATURE IS WEIRD LIKE THAT. A leaf is not a leaf is not a leaf. You probably don't eat your lawn but you eat salads etc.
Once I have a yard I want to explore the use of permeable pavers and rain gardens to control storm-water. I'm very interested in green roofs and will be taking a class in the fall to learn more. I will also be compiling links to other websites far more informed than I on certain subjects.

Trying organic weed control: Vinegar and friends pt 2

Hello! So in retrospect the thing i have learned is that there are no shortcuts in landscaping. For the vinegar as herbicide it was suggested that the mixture was sprayed on the leaves of the plants however I decided it would be wise to dump the gallon haphazardly out on the weeds(most of which are tall slender crabgrass). Not unlike the fashion in which Cousin Eddy empties his RV tank in Christmas Vacation. The purpose of spraying the vinegar directly onto the leaves of the plant is due to the fact that it works by leeching the moisture out of the plant leaves. This did work on the weeds that I had dumped the vinegar mixture on that laid closer to the earth with fanned out leaves which ended up coming into contact with much more vinegar. ugh A little shriveling on the broad-leaf weeds But the hand weeding had to happen. However this will not work if it is simply being poured into the ground where the weeds are. I still have a crabgrass problem but I ended...

A new mailbox/house for small creatures.

Hello friends! Happy Earth Day!! Your suggested reading music to pair with this post: A little over a month ago I noticed our mailbox must have jumped off the curb and hit a snow plow over the winter. Mmmm... rusty nails...  So, I put it on a mental list of " things I should consider addressing when I'm feeling up to it, eventually ". And then a couple weeks later we had a day where we had 60 mph winds ( #Illinois ) and I came home and the situation had grown decidedly more urgent. womp womp. Luckily I had set the gears in motion earlier that week to " start to obtain required objects to replace the broken thing, eventually ". I found a mailbox on Amazon with the model name "Villager" which sold me because I already thought it looked like a house from Animal Crossing. The box it came in was human sized but not heavy like a human of the same size. <_<   >_>   O_O The reviews ...

I've been ruminating over times in my life where I have felt the need to hide my excitement about things due to a fear of an outside party not sharing that excitement.  In time I've come to a place where I decided every interest, hobby, or craft is equally valid and what you are drawn to depends on what you have been exposed to so far. Sharing things that excite you gives other people a chance to  relate to you or learn about something that could also bring them happiness.  Granted you shouldn't talk someone's ear off if they are clearly not interested in the topic but you can still throw it out there and see if it blossoms into a new collaborator or friend. :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :)   :) #happiness #youdoyou
